Recorder Masterclass

The many different voices of the recorder
In the name of the recorder, two essential characteristics of the instrument are revealed.

The name in Italian is flauto dolce (sweet, or soft flute), which indicates that the intimate sound colour and vulnerability of the recorder belong to its core identity.

The second characteristic is revealed in the English name ‘recorder’, which comes from the Latin word ‘ricordare’: to remember or to imitate.

Historically, the recorder has been used to imitate other instruments and specifically melodies that were sung.

The ideal technique of any recorder player therefore has to be extremely flexible, changing depending on the type of recorder we are holding in our hands.

In this course I would like to explore together with the students how to develop a flexible technique that enables us to feel free within the stylistic framework of different repertoires.

Further information about the course will be available soon.
