Early music fans will enjoy a special concert in Pécs featuring György Vashegyi, who collaborates with Capella Savaria and the Purcell Choir to premiere a Hungarian work. The Passion poem by Hamburg poet Barthold Heinrich Brockes inspired composers such as George Frideric Handel, Georg Philipp Telemann, and Johann Sebastian Bach, who integrated parts of it into his St John Passion. In this concert, celebrated for authentic early music, performers will showcase Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel’s musical setting of this text. Stölzel, who began studying music early, furthered his education in several German cities in composition, organ, and theology, and maintained a close relationship with Bach, who appreciated his talent and arranged some of his works. Over his lifetime, Stölzel composed more than 2,000 works, including operas, oratorios, cantatas, organ pieces, and chamber music, all characterized by a rich Baroque style and harmonic creativity. Though not as famous as Bach or Handel, his influence was significant among his contemporaries.

The audience in Pécs is fortunate to have already encountered another Stölzel Passion in recent years and can now meaningfully compare this work with Handel's and Telemann's settings of the same lyrics.

The event is organized in cooperation with the Haydneum – Hungarian Center for Early Music and the Orfeo Music Foundation of Sysart Ltd. Haydneum’s activities are supported by the Prime Minister’s Office and the Bethlen Gábor Fund Management Ltd.
