Christmas calls for The Nutcracker—this time with a touch of jazz and a big band twist!
Jazz adaptations of classical masterpieces rarely succeed without compromise. The two genres differ greatly in musical language, structure, and expression, making common ground hard to find. The big band, however, is a remarkable exception, with its sound and instrumentation perhaps coming closer than any other jazz ensemble to those of a symphony orchestra. It is no coincidence that Duke Ellington, one of the defining figures of big-band jazz, chose this very format when he and Billy Strayhorn reimagined Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker.
Released in 1960, the Nutcracker Suite is far more than a simple arrangement—it is a creative reinterpretation. Ellington and Strayhorn transformed the familiar ballet melodies with swing, blues, and sophisticated big-band orchestration, while preserving the original score's wit and elegance. The "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" becomes the velvety "Sugar Rum Cherry," and the "Dance of the Reed Pipes" is reborn as the exuberant "Toot Toot Tootie Toot." The album captures both the warmth of a beloved Christmas classic and the irresistible energy of jazz.
Although Tchaikovsky never encountered jazz, his pupil and protégé, Sergei Rachmaninoff, was an enthusiastic admirer of the genre, making it easy to imagine that the composer might have welcomed such an inspired transformation. Today, the Nutcracker Suite remains one of the finest and most imaginative examples of how jazz can breathe new life into a classical masterpiece.
